Cerebellar guidance of premotor network development and sensorimotor learning.

Single unit and imaging studies have shown that the cerebellum is especially active during the acquisition phase of certain motor and cognitive tasks. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that particular sensorimotor procedures are acquired and stored in the cerebellar cortex and that this knowledge can then be exported to the cerebral cortex and premotor networks for more efficient ex...

Network-specific resting-state connectivity changes in the premotor-parietal axis in writer's cramp

BACKGROUND Writer's cramp is a task-specific dystonia impairing writing and sometimes other fine motor tasks. Neuroimaging studies using manifold designs have shown varying results regarding the nature of changes in the disease. OBJECTIVE To clarify and extend the knowledge of underlying changes by investigating functional connectivity (FC) in intrinsic connectivity networks with putative sen...

Functionally specific changes in resting-state sensorimotor networks after motor learning.

Motor learning changes the activity of cortical motor and subcortical areas of the brain, but does learning affect sensory systems as well? We examined in humans the effects of motor learning using fMRI measures of functional connectivity under resting conditions and found persistent changes in networks involving both motor and somatosensory areas of the brain. We developed a technique that all...

Neural substrates of visuomotor learning based on improved feedback control and prediction

Motor skills emerge from learning feedforward commands as well as improvements in feedback control. These two components of learning were investigated in a compensatory visuomotor tracking task on a trial-by-trial basis. Between-trial learning was characterized with a state-space model to provide smoothed estimates of feedforward and feedback learning, separable from random fluctuations in moto...

Overlapping and parallel cerebello-cerebral networks contributing to sensorimotor control: An intrinsic functional connectivity study

In concert with sensorimotor control areas of the cerebrum, the cerebellum shows differential activation patterns during a variety of sensorimotor-related tasks. However, the spatial details and extent of the complex and heterogeneous cerebello-cerebral systems involved in action control remain uncertain. In this study, we use intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) to examine cerebello-cerebra...

Brain changes associated with postural training in patients with cerebellar degeneration: a voxel-based morphometry study.

Recent research indicates that physiotherapy can improve motor performance of patients with cerebellar degeneration. Given the known contributions of the cerebellum to motor learning, it remains unclear whether such observable changes in performance are mediated by the cerebellum or cerebral brain areas involved in motor control and learning. The current study addressed this question by assessi...
